“How much is a website?” is a bit like asking “how much is a van?” It depends what you need it to do. A one-page site for a sole trader and an online shop with hundreds of products are very different jobs.
This guide explains what changes the price, what you’ll pay for after launch and what to ask before you say yes to anyone, including us.
What affects the cost
- Number of pages. A simple site with Home, Services, About and Contact is quicker to build than one with a page for every service and every town.
- Custom design or a template. A design made around your brand takes more time than dropping your logo into a ready-made layout.
- Words and images. Do you have the text and photos ready, or do you need someone to write and source them?
- Online shop or bookings. Taking payments or bookings adds set-up and testing.
- Search engine set-up. Page titles, descriptions, fast loading and local pages all take time but help people find you.
- Extras. Forms, email set-up, newsletter sign-ups and tracking each add a bit.
Your three main options
- Do it yourself on a website builder. The lowest upfront cost, but you pay with your time, and the result often looks like everyone else’s.
- A freelancer or small agency. A professional design built around your business, usually at a fixed price. This is the sweet spot for most small businesses.
- A large agency. Suits bigger projects with complex needs. It usually costs a lot more than a small business needs.
Costs after launch
A website isn’t a one-off purchase. Budget for:
- Your domain name. Usually a small yearly fee.
- Hosting. Usually a monthly or yearly fee, depending on the platform.
- Updates and security. Keeping the site up to date and backed up.
- Fresh content. Occasional new pages or blog posts so the site doesn’t go stale.
Ask anyone quoting you to list these clearly, so there are no surprises.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Do I own the website, the domain and the content?
- Can I edit the text and photos myself?
- Will it work properly on a phone?
- Is basic search engine set-up included?
- What happens if I want changes after launch?
- Is the price fixed, and what is not included?
How we price websites
Our website design service starts from £750 and is built on WordPress or Shopify, so you can update it yourself. Every quote is fixed and written down, so you know what you’re getting before you commit. Because we also do local SEO and branding, your site can be set up to be found from day one.
