Your logo is often the first thing a customer sees. It’s on your van, your website, your social profiles and your invoices. When it’s working, nobody notices. When it isn’t, it quietly makes your business look smaller, older or less trustworthy than it really is.
Here are seven signs it might be time for a change.
1. It falls apart when it’s small
Look at your logo as a tiny circle on Facebook or Instagram, or as the little icon in a browser tab. If the text is unreadable or the detail turns to mush, it isn’t built for how people see you today.
2. It only works in full colour
Sooner or later you’ll need your logo on a black and white invoice, an engraved sign or a stamp. A good logo has a single-colour version that still looks right.
3. It looks dated, or no longer fits what you do
Businesses change. If you’ve grown, moved into new services or started aiming at a different kind of customer, a logo from your first year may be telling the wrong story.
4. It looks different everywhere
One version on the website, a stretched one on the van, a faded one on your flyers. When a logo appears in slightly different forms, customers see a business that isn’t quite organised.
5. It looks like everyone else’s
If your logo is a stock symbol or a template that a competitor could easily have picked too, it won’t help people remember you.
6. You only have a low-quality file
A small JPG that goes blurry when printed is a common problem. A proper logo comes as scalable vector files plus the usual web and print versions, so it looks sharp on a business card or a shop fascia.
7. You’re not proud to use it
If you avoid putting your logo on things, that tells you something. Your logo should be something you’re happy to show off.

Redesign doesn’t mean starting again
A new logo doesn’t have to throw away what customers already know. For McPhail Career Development, we evolved an established logo to say growth without losing what clients already recognised. You can see the result in our work.
What a good small business logo does
- It’s simple enough to remember after one look.
- It works at any size, from a favicon to a van.
- It works in one colour as well as full colour.
- It suits your customers, not just your own taste.
- It comes with the right files, so you never get stuck.
How we do it
Our logo and brand design service starts with a short brief, then three different logo concepts, then refinement until you love it. You get all the files you need and, if you want them, brand guidelines to keep everything consistent.
