Mailchimp for small businesses: the 5 emails to set up first

Laptop and coffee mug on a desk, ready to write an email newsletter.

Email is one of the few marketing channels where you own the audience. Social platforms change their rules and your reach can drop overnight, but your email list is yours. For a small business, a handful of well-planned emails can bring customers back again and again, without paying for each click.

Mailchimp is a popular, beginner-friendly way to do it. The trick is not to start with a blank page and a vague plan. Set up these five emails first.

1. The welcome email

This is the first thing new subscribers get, and they’re most interested at that moment. Say thank you, tell them what to expect and how often, and give them one useful next step, such as a link to your services or a small offer. Set it up once and Mailchimp sends it automatically to everyone who joins.

2. The regular update

This is your newsletter. Keep it simple: one main story, a couple of quick tips or news items and one button. A short monthly email that people actually read beats a long one that nobody opens.

3. The seasonal or special offer

A discount, a limited-time deal or a seasonal reminder, like “book your boiler service before winter”. Give people a clear reason to act now, and one obvious button to do it.

4. The thank-you and review request

After someone buys or uses your service, send a short thank-you and ask for a review, with a direct link to your Google Business Profile. This builds trust, and it feeds your local search results too.

5. The “we’ve missed you” email

Send this to people who haven’t bought or opened anything for a while. A friendly reminder, a useful update or a small incentive can bring some of them back.

Get the basics right

  • Only email people who’ve agreed to hear from you. UK data protection and email marketing rules require permission, and every email needs a clear way to unsubscribe. Mailchimp builds this in, but you need to use it properly.
  • Add a sign-up form to your website. The easiest way to grow a list is to make joining easy.
  • Use your brand. Your logo, colours and tone of voice should look the same in your emails as everywhere else.
  • Check it on your phone. Most people read email on a mobile.
  • Keep a steady rhythm. Choose a frequency you can stick to, then stick to it.

Let us set it up properly

Our email marketing service sets up Mailchimp properly, with branded templates, sign-up forms and Shopify connection if you have an online shop, so bringing customers back takes minutes rather than hours. If you need a branded look to go with it, our logo and brand design work keeps everything consistent.
