Facebook and Instagram ads for local businesses: where to start

Your customers are already scrolling Facebook and Instagram. The difference with ads is that you choose who sees you: people who live near you, at the right age, who might actually want what you sell. For a local business, that’s a very efficient way to get in front of the right people.

But it’s also easy to waste money. Here’s how to start sensibly.

1. Pick one goal

Before you spend a penny, decide what a successful ad looks like. Do you want phone calls, messages, website visits or sign-ups? Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, builds your campaign around a single goal, so choose the one that matters most. Trying to do everything usually achieves nothing.

2. Target locally

You can show ads to people within a set distance of your business, or in specific towns. For most local businesses, start with the area you can realistically serve, such as Ferndown, Bournemouth, Poole and Wimborne. Don’t over-narrow the audience on day one. Let the ads run, then look at who responds.

3. Use real, bright, clear images

Photos of your real work, your team or your product beat generic stock images. Keep the main image simple and make sure it still works on a small phone screen. A short video of 10 to 15 seconds can do very well too.

4. Write like a person

Good ad copy is short, specific and friendly. Say who it’s for, what you offer and what to do next. Compare “Quality services for all your needs” with “Free quote on garden clearance in Ferndown, booked within the week”. The second one gets a response.

5. Send people somewhere useful

An ad is only half the job. If someone taps it and lands on a slow, confusing page, you lose them. Send them to a page that matches the ad, loads quickly on a phone and makes it easy to contact you.

6. Start small and give it time

A modest daily budget is enough to learn what works. Don’t judge an ad after a day. Give it at least a week, check the results and change one thing at a time, such as the image, the headline or the audience.

Five common mistakes

  • Boosting a post with no goal. The Boost button is quick, but it rarely does what you actually want.
  • Targeting the whole country. You’ll pay to reach people you can’t serve.
  • Giving up too early. Ads need a short learning period.
  • Ignoring messages and comments. Reply quickly. People expect it.
  • No way to measure. If you can’t tell where enquiries came from, you can’t improve.

Ads and organic posts work best together

Paid ads bring new people in. Regular posts keep your page looking active when they check you out. If you’d like both handled, our social media and Meta ads service covers content that sounds like you, plus Facebook and Instagram advertising aimed at local customers across Dorset and Hampshire.

If you need somewhere good to send ad traffic, a fast website matters just as much as the ad itself.
